The island has a public road leading from the harbour to the beach Trouville. Between the old houses and the sheds are only hard-trodden paths. The oldest existing houses were built in the mid-1700s. Sandön is an old lighthouse, pilot and customs place. About 300 people lived on the island during the 1800s, most pilots and customs officers. Agriculture, fishing and hunting were ancillary.
