Today's press conference was well attended and comprehensive. Nearly 30 national and international reporters and photographers were present at Operaterassen and the subsequent mingling. Our press officer Mats Olsson interviewed Mayor Sten Nordin, ÅF CEO Jonas Wiström and club director Staffan Salén, the professional sailors Jochen Schumann and Alex Thomson and amateurs Eva Sporrner and Magnus Nordberg.
The city of Stockholm's support of ÅFOR depends largely on Sten Nordin's belief that one should "use the water" preferably combined with the possibilities of a festival for locals and visitors. Then a racing event is something which all residents and visitors can assimilate, giving value to Stockholm as a destination and stimulating the hospitality industry.
The main sponsor ÅF's CEO Jonas Wiström used the sponsorship deliberately with a stated goal, to use the competition to attract qualified people to move to Stockholm and work at ÅF: -This is a good context for ÅF to find itself in. Sailing as a sport also stands up for the environment and values consistent with ÅF's. KSSS has indeed been able to create and develop a good concept, sailing and technically.
KSSS director Staffan Salén believes that this competition is this year's sporting highlight, a mobilization of it all: -It is a thrilling experience starting upstream and moving into town. It means that we can showcase sailing as a sport, adding value to our sponsors through the audience attraction, and not the least, the sailors have fun.
